To Train A Horse
To train up a horse
Well it takes tons of time
It takes a lot of effort
To make this pony mine.
I start with a hackamore
Fit on his nose just right
Then add pressure and release
Til his nerves become light.
I get up close and I
Whisper in his ear
And let him know right now
He has nothin to fear.
Then when he is ready
I add a bit and a bridle
I know I must keep him movin
Not letting him stay idle.
When I add a saddle
And strap it on tight
The first time I git on
I hold on with all my might.
Now with the bit in his mouth
And the reigns in my hands
I can lead him anywhere
As I ride this open land.
I add some chaps and some spurs
We are ridin in style
Knowin this horse trusts me
Really makes me smile.
Now I know this horse is part of me
For we have become as one
He knows what I expect
And that’s what makes it so fun.
As I look in his eyes and
See the lights in them a blinkin
I don’t want to change the horse
Just his way of thinkin.
Now If I can train a horse
Surely I could train a man
I would start a little at a time
And move as subtle as I can.
The way to a man’s heart
Is through his belly it is said
If I put a bit of food in his mouth
Then maybe I can turn his head.
I git up close and whisper
Sweet nothings in his ear
And fill it full of fearless words
Like honey, sweetie and dear.
Then I strap him with kindness
And I rope him with pride
Cuz I would ride anywhere
With him by my side.
If I add some fancy concho’s
And put on a nice pair of chinks
Then I can lead him anywhere
Cuz I know how he thinks.
Now I add some respect
And I spur him in style
Knowin this man trusts me
Really makes me smile.
Now I know he is a part of me
For we have become as one
He knows what I expect
And that’s what makes it so fun.
Then when he is ready
I will chomp at the bit
And mention the word bridle
And see if he gits the fit.
Because when I look at him
With his bright eyes a winkin
I’m not tryin to change the man
Just his way of thinkin.
